So, what is sex addiction?

Sex addiction covers any sexual activity that feels ‘out of control’ and causes problems in someone’s life which, despite trying to stop, they find they are unable to.  It may include a single behaviour or many different types of sexual behaviour.  Some examples are:

  • Compulsive viewing of pornography
  • Chat lines
  • Visiting prostitutes
  • Multiple ongoing affairs
  • Visiting sex cinemas
  • Exhibitionism
  • Voyeurism
  • Compulsive masturbation
  • Fetishes
  • Anonymous sex
  • Telephone sex
  • Illegal sexual practices

Problematic viewing of pornography, often referred to as porn addiction, is accelerating due to accessibility, affordability and anonymity.   Often clients have tried to stop or reduce their behaviour unsuccessfully, leading them to neglect other interests and their world becomes smaller and smaller.  Many people caught up in this behaviour experience distress and feelings of shame and isolation and this can lead to personal, relationship and sometimes financial problems.
